i have grade 2 scariolitis (as) and i take no medication. i have low hemoglobin 118, low mch 27.2 and high rdw which came on suddenly. my blood count was normal six weeks ago, except the low potassium level of 3.3. could i have aoi anemia or inflammation?

: Your bloodwork appears normal, not consistent with anemia. Slight variation up and/or down in such values is to be expected and repeating blood work should clarify.  Your current doc remains best to place in context as it seems that you have different conditions being treated as well.

Lab results : For the ALT is a liver enzyme and is elevated. The AST,another liver enzyme test , is in the normal range however. The remainder of the lab results noted are unremarkable. Medications can cause elevation of liver function tests. A thorough history and physical examination by your doctor would be advised in looking at all of your lab results in light of the medicines that you take.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, none of the CBC results are a cause for concern.    Wish you good health!

Thanks for asking!: Mch stands for mean corpuscular hemoglobin (average amount of hemoglobin per red blood cell).  It is one of the parameters in the red cell index of a CBC test.  A low MCH may indicate iron deficiency anemia from dietary insufficiency or blood loss.  Further work-up and clinical correlation is suggested.

: Never use abbreviations in medicine. Can be deadly. Always send normal values for your lab as they may differ across labs. Not possible to interpret with out talking to and seeing you. Need detailed family history of blood issues, where were you born and your ethnicity? Has iron been checked? Do you eat clay?

Red cell indicators: Mcv = mean corpuscular volume.  This has to do with the average size of the red cells in the blood
mch = mean corpuscular hemoglobin. This has to do with the average concentration of hemoglobin in the red cells in the blood

Blood count terms: Rdw means red cell distribution width, which is the range of values for the width of your red blood cells. A higher number could mean that you are making lots more red cells for some reason.
Mch mean mean (or average) red cell hemoglobin, which is the amount of hemoglobin in each red blood cell. If it's low, this means that your cells aren't carrying as much hemoglobin as they should.
