Insect bite: Hi Tracy, 
the initial stage for a bite will be supportive treatment, which are things we can do to lessen you symptoms.
you can try icing it, take ibuprofen for pain.
this should get better in a few days, but if it does not or if you have fever, develop an abscess, you should see a doctor to see if you may have infection that requires antibiotics.

i have what was definitely an insect bite on my thigh. it's red around it and very warm to the touch. is this infected or just the bite?

Uncertain: If the problem is spreading and or with pus, I would suspect an infection with spider bite being the strongest suspect.  May need to see your doctor to get treated.

Bug bites: Try benadryl and some ibuprofen. Also apply topical cool compress. Some topical cortisone may help too. If fever, not improving or worsening redness, swellng or SOB get checked.

got an unknown bug bite 2 days ago and the swelling disappeared shortly after initial bite, but now area is red and warm to touch around the bite but there is no pus or swelling at the moment it just itches a bit. if it helps it was a single puncture

May be infected: Insect bites can become infected and develop into abscesses. If possible a doctor should evaluate it and decide if antibiotics are necessary.

Unlikely: There are many ways to try to treat or soothe insect bites, but applying anything warm is not one of them.  With most insect bites, there is a histamine release which causes itching and redness &amp; anything warm will make this worse. Applying a cool compress, an OTC steroid cream (2 times a day) may help with this. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or another antihistamine may help with the itch.
