Possibly: Inositol is a natural supplement that may help anxiety by reducing the stress response.  In two small studies, doses of 12 to 18 g per day was as effective for reducing intensity and frequency of panic attacks as ssri and better than placebo for reducing intensity and frequency of panic attacks.  Side-effects were comparable to ssri and include possible gastrointestinal upset.

: It is not an approved treatment, only a supplement, sometimes called vitamin B8. It affects chemical messengers in your brain, such as serotonin and dopamine, which could probably explain its effectiveness in alleviating anxiety.

18 grams/day or more: Studies have been done using up to 18 grams of Inositol per day and found it safe &amp; well-tolerated with few mild side effects. If it works for you it's better than drugs as it's safer &amp; less habit-forming, but also try exercise, meditation &amp; counseling. Inositol: Is a supplement found to be of some benefits for hair & cholesterol, eyes & skin. I am not aware of its use for severe anxiety & doubt it has benefits there.

Somewhat: Like most other b vitamins, they CAN have a postive effect on mood disorders, but not as effective as drug therapy.

To some extent: They are helpful. Another supplement that helps with anxiety but is not sedating is theanine. It's an Amino Acid found in green tea and doses of 100-400 mg are very helpful in reducing anxiety.

my doctor suggested 8 grams of powdered inositol daily for anxiety. can i take this with minocin (minocycline) and ativan? should i start on a smaller dose?

Yes you can, BUT: Please don't rely solely on Ativan (lorazepam) or even inositol to deal with your anxiety.  If you haven't already, please get a comprehensive evaluation of your anxiety by a psychiatrist and psychologist who knows cbt and other talk therapies well.
