Two weeks: Irritation of the balance system will result in vertigo, nausea, even vomiting with balance problems.  The system needs time to recover and re-regulate.  This usually takes about 10 days to two weeks.  Medications may make recovery faster, but some make it slower and cause persistent symptoms.  Rest and good health habits improve rate of recovery.

my doctor told me i have labrythitis and told me to take mecklizine as well as xanax (alprazolam).. how does the xanax (alprazolam) help with inner ear inflammation?

It doesn't: Xanax (alprazolam) is really just a "band-aid" to help you deal with the symptoms from the labyrinthitis but it has no effect on inflammation.   There are a number of natural herbs/vitamins that can help with inflammation and symptoms, so speak to your doctor.  Consider vitamin c, magnesium, ginger, zinc, etc.

Possibly: Depends on the cause of the inflammation.  Prednisone is a  strong anti inflammatory, but won't treat an infection alone.

Dental visit: Start with a dental visit and xrays to eliminate wisdom teeth problems, then to ENT if no results.

Accepted Answer

Depends: The answer depends on the severity of the infection and the bacteria or virus causing it.  If truly with an accompanying inner ear issue, an antihistamine or decongestant medication, even one such as "antivert" (meclizine) may help with symptoms of dizziness, etc. And once treated with antibx if needed and meds as above, you should get better in a few days. If not, then see ENT dr. Good luck.

Call doctor: High dose of steroid may induce side effects (insomnia, GI upset, anxiety etc).  The question is whether without it you may end up with permanent damages.  Thus you need to contact the doctor to tell him about the side effects and see if there may be alternatives.

inner ear eczema & otitis, ointment, drops (tobradex (tobramycin and dexamethasone) & burosol) are temp fixes. it's been going on for more than a year now. need alternate suggestion?

Eczema of ear : You have to be patient with this condition.  It takes a long time for this to heal.  I usually write for triamcinalone cream 0.1 % and tell my patients to put it liberally on a qtip and twirl it in the ear canal and rub some on the flat part of the concha of the ear.  It is a prescription so ask you family doctor for it. In two weeks you will be better.  Only use for 2 wks  then once a week after.

when to the doctor they said i have inner ear infection (otitis media) they gave me amox- calv took all the meds 3 weeks later my ears still hurt? why do they still hurt?

Several options: A middle ear infection  generally hurts because the mass of germs/pus/fluid in the tiny middle ear space pushes the drum out. When/if the germs die the mass begins to shrink &amp; should resolve with fluid draining into the throat through the Eustachian tube. That can suck the drum in, causing some transient pain. The infection could also return after meds stop.Seek a re-check.

Physical therapist: Typically, therapy for the management of a chronic vestibular or inner ear disorder is performed by a physical therapist after an initial evaluation by an ear, nose, and throat specialist.

Speak to therapist: The theory is that nerve pressure contributes to,or is causal for the problem. Since some these nerves have a presence among cervical vertebrae (neck), stretching the vertebral spaces (distraction) can be beneficial.mI am glad it was in your case. Now discuss with your therapist how to maintain stretch at home after formal therapy ends. Traction, special pillows, posture training and so forth.
