i have swelling over the top of my ribs on my upper left quadrant. i felt a sharp pain when i was doing deadlifts yesterday. i am very concerned i may have injured my spleen. if i had injured my spleen would there be swelling above my ribs?

No: If you injured your spleen, unlikely, you won't have swelling above your ribs, and the sharp pain you felt can be very well be musculoskeletal (muscle, ligament or bone),  rest the area, apply warm compresses, and take pain killers. See your doctor for further evaluation, best wishes

A good cardiac: Exam ; chest x-ray to r/o any other pathology--see your pcp or internist.

i have a radiating pain into my clavicle which has now started in my rib cage area on the one side, i have not been sick, nor have i fallen or injured myself. what could it be?

Monitor it for now: Pains like this can happen to all of us but they usually resolve in 1-2 weeks. You may need to take a mild pain pill like Tylenol if it is bothering you much.
If the pain is progressing to more severe degree in 2 weeks time, then you need to see your doctor for examination and possibly some tests to find out the cause and to make sure that your bones are healthy.

i've a hard/visible lump on the side/back of my rib cage. i've osteoporosis. injured area 3 months ago. intermittent pain. any ideas? will see doc.

X-rays and pain meds: With your history of osteoporosis/Celiac Disease and a injury to the area 3 months ago I would be concerned if you did not have a fracture to the rib cage. You should see your doctor as you suggest and x-rays should be done to confirm the diagnosis. For the intermittent pain, which is likely positional , a heating pad to the area and acetaminophen.

Yes: It may slip and lead to a condition called slipped rib syndrome. It can be manually replaced by an osteopathic physician, physical therapist or chiropractor.

Nothing specific: There are no specific exercises for such an injury.  Rather, you can work on generalized conditioning (i.e. Walking, light aerobic exercise) as well as core strengthening..

EVAL: Sorry. Don't know the extent of injury. Also don't know your symptoms. Many conditions can result from thoracic injury (i.e., pulmonary contusion, pneumothorax, hemothorax etc). It is best to see a physician for evaluation if you have significant symptoms.

Degeneration, trauma: Are common causes. Ribs also have cartilage in front that can get misplaced during injury or even during sleep.

Rib pain: You probably fractured a rib. This can take some months to heal and the pain to completely subside. If you are not having any shortness of breath and otherwise feeling well, you are probably OK.
