Feel miserable.: Fever, chills, cough, body aches, fatigue, congestion.  Some vomiting/diarrhea, (influenza is not same as stomach flu).  I've heard these descriptions:  "like a truck backed over me, and i wished he'd come back and finish the job."  "everything hurt.  My arms, my legs, my head. . . Fingernails and eyebrows hurt."  "i hurt so badly, i couldn't even sleep."  get shot-2 more strains could infect you.

Time to see a doctor: 10 days is too long for a common cold.  You might have a more serious condition such as pneumonia.

Probably normal: If the mucus is from your nose, this is probably the normal progression of your illness.  Most viral illnesses start with clear nasal dc x 2-3 days, then colored dc x 2-3 days, then clear dc.  If the colored nasal dc persists more than 10-14 days, you may have a secondary bacterial infection and  should call your doctor for addtional instructions.  Hope you feel better soon.

Hygiene: Since you can't live in a bubble, keep away form people who you know have the flu, wash your hands, cover your cough and sneeze and get the flu shot !

Basic stuff: First, get vaccinated so you don't get it in the first place.  But if you do get it, stay home, wash your hands often, sneeze into your arm rather than your hand, and avoid touching or kissing people.

Influenza: If you see a doctor within 72 hours of the onset of influenza, s/he can prescribe a medication (tamiflu) that will shorten the length of illness by a day or two. Otherwise you will just have to wait it out. Usual duration of illness is about 5 days.
