hello doc. may i know how to prevent children away from new influenza in beijing?

New bird flu: So far there has been no person to person spread of this new strain out of china.It has been limited to those with intimate contact with birds in the raising or preparation for sale. Many birds have been removed & destroyed in an attempt to limit the spread of this strain.As long as the kids are kept away from these birds they should be safe. The cdc & who are monitoring the situation.

Hygiene: Since you can't live in a bubble, keep away form people who you know have the flu, wash your hands, cover your cough and sneeze and get the flu shot !

Basic stuff: First, get vaccinated so you don't get it in the first place.  But if you do get it, stay home, wash your hands often, sneeze into your arm rather than your hand, and avoid touching or kissing people.

: A true viral 'cold' or influenza can be acquired by coming in contact with objects contaminated by the virus.  Extreme cold itself does not cause influenza or viral cold but lowers your resistance and makes you more prone.

Flu prevention: The best way to keep from getting flu is to maintain good hand hygiene.  Regular handwashing and/or use of hand wipes or gels if you cannot get to soap and water goes a long way in minimizing your risk of acquiring infection.  Try to do this after handling objects in public places.  Getting the annual flu shot may also minimize your risk.

Adults' over-the-counter medicines for colds may be ok to use if one follows the labels' instructions, stays below maximum doses, and is not using more than one medicine of each type. Fever and pain reducers include acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Cough meds include Robitussin (some people use DM, some avoid it). Decongestants and antihistamines include Claritin-D, Zyrtec-D, etc...

influenza  symptoms&its protection

Fast and can be bad: Fever, chills, achiness, cough, congestion, headache, sorethroat starting  about 18-72 hours after exposure and u become contagious starting just around onset of symptoms or a bit before and continue for about 5-10 days. Young children may shed for longer period of time. With appropriate treatment/med, shedding should stop in about 72 hours. Prevention is key--vaccination & handwashing..
