Very unlikely: As long as the phlebotomist is trained, your risk of infection is low. Redness at the site of the draw is typically phlebitis, or inflammation of the vein where the needle went in. This is not an infection, and can be treated with warm compresses.

Skin infection: It is theoretically possible to get infected at a blood draw site, but it is extremely rare. There is little or no risk of infection from the person drawing blood -- the risk is mainly from bacteria already on your skin, like staph or strep. A red streak from the blood draw site indeed could be an infection. If it keeps extending or spreading, or if fever, check with doctor immediately.

Not likely to occur: The venipuncture site is usually small and heals well. Observe the site for any swelling, redness or drainage. If he has a fever or any of these signs, please see your PCP.

Cat bite: Cat bites can be infectious and definitely need oral antibiotics. Also stray cat can cause rabies and need vaccination and treatment for rabies as soon as possible.

Non - risk : As a person who draws blood, you will be following your institution's policies on infection prevention and observe universal precautions while performing your duties. That said, unless you are going home with blood- soaked shoes and allowing you & your family to handle them, then there is no risk in transmitting an infection.

Infection is more likely if a person has a poorly functioning immune system, such as some cancer patients during treatment.

Many things possible: Many things are possible in life, and there are no guarantees in life except "death and taxes." So, yes, there is always a chance of infection whenever one gets poked with a needle... but with proper procedures, that chance is zero (mathematically rounded, of course). And, yes, the blood could be from you... merely because anything could have happened (you must be the judge, as we were not there).

Sheep bite: Hey i would not be too concerned about the sheep - its you and the finger that is of concern. Infections from animal bites can be bad. Please go to the er and get it checked.
