Swelling, pain ...: Root canal is usually a localized infection but can become systemic.  Symptoms of a systemic infection include pain, swelling, fever, loss of function and redness.  If your symptoms from the emergency have subsided healing is probably occurring.  I would be best to revisit your dentist to check your progress.

Consult with dentist: The Usual Adult Dose for Bacterial Infection is Oral:
A serious infection: 150 to 300 mg orally every 6 hours
A more severe infection: 300 to 450 mg orally every 6 hours. However, I highly suggest you consult with your dentist about the dose you should be taking.

Infection dependent: This depends on the size of the infection, the amount of time it has been present, the success of the root canal and the proper antibiotic used. Typically a week, give or take.

Residual bacterial: During the process bacteria are inadvertantly shoved out the end of the tooth into the bone which normally your body can take care of and it is not a problem but in some cases your body is not able to destroy them soon enough to avoid the bacterial infection that spreads which takes a few days to manifest as in your case.  See your dentist for post op care.

Infected tooth: It is hard to believe that you could have an infected tooth for so many years without severe symptoms.  An untreated infection of a tooth can lead to an abscess of the jaw which can cause severe pain and total body infection and even death.  You need to see a dentist and have X-rays and if indicated antibiotics.

No pain: The dentist can best tell you for your situation.   However, the absence of pain is a nice sign.

Possibly: During or after the root canal process, we often times looks for external signs that an infection is resolving.  The lack of pain and swelling is a good sign.  Unfortunately, antibiotics are also often given along with the treatment.  Antibiotics can often mask the true success or failure of the root canal therapy.  The best way to tell is to re-evaluate the root canal a year or so later.
