Yes, but rarely: A tooth that needs root canal therapy or a tooth that has a failing rct can the whole body.  The infection can migrate to other parts of the body and produce infections.  Happens rarely, but a good reason not to delay treatment.

No: The infection usually resolves quite quickly,  in the order of days to weeks.   The bone that was lost due to the abscess can months to years to fill in.  That of course assumes the treatment is successful.   Followup is very important to ensure all is well.

Is this the problem?: 1) you had a new crown placed on one of your molars (was this a replacement for a previous crown that failed?)
2) infection then occurred, they did a root canal treatment& placed a temp filling which fell out
3) you went to new dentist, 
this treatment is possible: remove current crown, build up tooth & place new crown. Or if the crown is intact with just a small hole, fill hole up with composite.

See your dentist: A bite where you have too much force on one tooth can cause pain while biting.  This is not an infection but it does need to be adjusted. This can be a simple adjustment.
 There are other reasons for pain after a root canal also.  It is best to see you dentist and find out what is going on.

: You have a bad infection.  There is a simple surgical principle which should guide you.  "Never let the sun go down on undrained puss!"
Sometimes you just need to take the next step and call a different dentist who can help you right away.  Even though it may cost more you will be better off i the long run. Puss must be drained now!
