had lump & dr said infected hair follicle. i had tried to extract hair, open sore. taking keflex, done 5 days. swelling down, sore healed but the ring of red around the lump that was there initially is now a ring that is almost white why what is it?

i have an infected hair follicle on my leg which i've read is folliculitis and is contagious. if my 6 month old gets it, can it be dangerous to him?

Soap and water: Even if your son is in direct contact, it is unlikely he will develop a skin infection.  A layer of clothing should be fine.  Keep the area washed clean daily  and if not getting better, see your doctor for help.

if i have an infected hair follicle (folliculitis) on my leg, can i spread it to someone else merely by shared bedding that the follicle touched?

Accepted Answer

Not likely: Folliculits would not be contagious in the way you described. I trust that you are keeping the area clean and using a topic antibiotic ointment, like neosporin. If it spreads to other hair follicles, it would be prudent to see your doctor for an evaluation.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Foliculitis: Try to keep area clean with good mild soap.  Don't shave area if you save too aggressively. If it persists see your doctor

Bartholin's cyst: Sounds like a bartholin's cyst. It is benign.
If you take some sitz baths in warm water  it should resolve. If it gets bigger or painful, see your doctor.

it looks like a sore from an ingrown hair follicle that popped, but it's much larger. they are quite painful but there is no pus or discharge. what could they be?

Genital ulcer: There are many possible causes -- no way to accurately guess with only this information. Genital herpes is the most common cause of genital ulceration. See a doctor ASAP:  if it's herpes, the sooner the better for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Shaving: Shaving can sometimes irritate the base of the hair, or the follicle and cause swelling, redness and itching. Keeping the area clean and dry along with refraining from shaving for about a week will allow the hair to grow through and the irritation improves. If you begin to have pain or a discolored discharge from the bumps, you should see your doctor for a closer look.

Folliculitis: It sounds like you may have an infected hair follicle which can initially appear like a pimple.  Sometimes this may turn into a furuncle or abscess.  Place a warm cloth on the area - this will help with blood flow and healing.  If the lesion gets bigger or you have fever see a doctor as you may need antibiotics.

Keratosis pilaris: More often seen in children but also possible in adults, hair follicles can respond to chronic inflammation from conditions like eczema by producing excess keratin.  This produces a white, rough substance over each follicle that improves with treatment of the underlying irritation.  In some situations, salicylic acid-based scrubs are helpful as well.

This is one possible explanation.
