1 month old, formula feed infant has dark green poop that smells like skunk (sometimes stringy looking)...baby is gassy as well. is this normal?

Could be: The first thing I would want to make sure is that your child is gaining weight appropriately and thriving.  If that is the case, there are numerous things that could be of help, such as different formulas.  That decision can be best made with your child's doctor who will know what formula your child is and/or has been on.  Good luck.

Irritation: Probably not infected but irritated skin from the poop.  You should try to change the diaper every 3-4 hrs in little babies.  Now that the area is irritated/inflammed apply a barrier cream and air out the diaper area.

Likely rotovirus: It is hard to be sure but one of the most common causes of diarrhea in that age group is rotovirus. That &amp; the smell of a  kids stools on amoxicillin were some of the most pungent. Infants are offered an oral vaccine to prevent it, but many don't take it. Care is generally supportive but some will require hospital based IV hydration/care.

Probably: Asparagus metabolism makes ammonia.  There is a lot of sulfer compounds in asparagus.  No harm. Proof of the poop-is stop eating asparagus and see how long it takes infant's poop not to smell so bad. Ammonia also comes out in the urine and is kind of stinky too!

Basics: Infants on breast milk may poop a smear every feed or once a week. Adding formula would make poops more regular but not necessarily daily. If it is soft when they poop it is normal. Fart smell is related to gut germs &amp; expected. Infants also cry often for no reason. If you think something bad is happening see your doc. From the posted info it is not clear anything is abnormal.

BRAT diet: We generally recommend the 'BRAT' diet for people with diarrhea, as it contains foods which help bind the stools.  Things like Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast, plain chicken, pastas, etc.  Electrolyte solutions such as Pedialyte help prevent dehydration and are better than sugary sodas or juices, which can make diarrhea worse.  Some people need to avoid dairy while they are having loose stools.
