i've just discovered a new indentation in my skull. for the past few weeks i've had tingling and itching along both ears. could thus be serious?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely.: All skulls have dents and bulges. In fact, a pseudoscience popular in the 1800s called phrenology claimed to be able to diagnose illnesses from those irregularities. Your indentation has probably been there all along, but if you're worried about it, let your doctor check it out.

i have indentations on the back of my head right above my ears. when ever they appear i have a massive headache. not due to glasses as they are new.

Accepted Answer

Sounds like: your headaches are consistent with a spasm in the temporalis muscles. The back edge (posterior border) of the muscle is approximately where you describe. I a tense contracted state or spasm it will puff up and protrude hence the bump. Do you happen to clench or grind your teeth? Consult with a dentist who can make appropriate diagnosis and treatment recommendations or referral.

Headaches?: Sometimes it can be muscle tension or spasms.

"Mastoid" process: Normal protrusion from the temporal bone, which is part of the skull

Accepted Answer

Possibly: Your glasses may be tooo tight and an adjustment by an optician may get rid of the problem.  If you are truly allergic to the plastic, coating it with lear nailpolish is a temporary solution.

Muscle irritation: It sounds like the glasses or headband are irritating the muscles around the ears. The temporalis muscles are in front and in back of the ears. Some people are more sensitive and compression by glasses or a headband may cause these to tighten and lead to pain. You may try adjusting the tension on the glasses or headband or decrease the amount of time wearing them.

pain at the base of the skull right behind my left ear, comes and goes but is so sharp when it does occur what could it be?

Pain: Hard to evaluate you over the internet but any pain that hasn't improved after a week or so should probably be looked at. You could try some ibuprofen and/or decongestants for a day or so. Heat and massage may work for muscle aches. But if not improving or if getting worse,  get in and see an MD to make sure it's nothing serious

i have a small bumb behind my ear (on the skull) . it doesn't hurt and doen't hurt when i touch it . it increases and decreases in size.

Lymph node: There are thousands of lymph node located around the body that help screen out germs in the serum before it returns to the circulation. There are many in the neck, head and behind the ear. At rest these are often 1/4 inch in diameter and may grow to marble sized when reacting to a stimulus. Bug bites, or viral infections can increase their size.They should shrink  down to nl size over a few wks.

when bending over & wearing glasses, i experience pain behind my ears. i suffer from sinutus (sp?) - could this be a symptom of that or something more

Accepted Answer

I do not think so: Sinus Congestion and Allergic Rhinitis can be treated with Steam Inhalation using Menthol, Turmeric and Ginger tea if you have Post nasal Drip.
 OTC Ibuprofen will aso help the headache. Short trial of Anti histaminic would help your allergy symptoms

i'm 39 & i've noticed a change in the shape of my skull. the flat area @ my crown is a deeper dent & i have a ridge behind both ears? causes/concerns?

Accepted Answer

Should not change: Once the skull has finished growing which is no later than 25 years old there should be no change in the skull shape. Behind the ears, the skull does feel like ridges. A further indentation at the crown area would indicate possibly some new bone growth. There are some disorders in which this occurs but they are not usually selective to just the skull. Paget's is one. See your MD and be checked.
