Leprosy: Treatment of leprosy differs depending on the form of the disease. Treatment generally continues for one year for tuberculoid leprosy and two years for lepromatous leprosy. With treatment, less than 0.1 percent of people fail to be cured of leprosy. In order to cure leprosy, doctors generally prescribe antibiotics that kill mycobacterium leprae.

Leprosy: Depends upon type of leprosy and its treatment
Pauci-bacillary leprosy : 1-5 skin lesions – Rifampicin and Dapsone for 6 months;
Multi-bacillary(MB) leprosy : &gt;5 skin lesions – Rifampicin,Clofazimine and Dapsone for 12 months; The rate of clearance will depend on the age and overall immune health of the patients. This is so variable that cannot predict.

Probably won't: These creatures are the natural reservoir but most are probably not infected, and to catch the illness, you probably have to inhale bacteria and have them develop in your nasopharynx. Most folks can be exposed to lepers for years and never catch the illess; it's probably contracted most often in childhood. Don't be scared of your local armadillo population.

ESR: Esr is a non-specific test for systemic inflammation and can be elevated in many systemic disease states.  Hansen's disease, or leprosy, has several forms--some with great amounts of inflammation and others with little or no inflammation.  Esr not specific enough. If you have hansen's, you need treatment.  If you are not sure, go see a dermatologist with some experience diagnosing hansen's.

Debated.: This is an important question that I would defer to those who study mycobacterial diseases (mycobacteriologists). I will say that the question of if leprosy is contagious, and how much, in this stage is debated. See http://www.bmj.com/content/3/5880/557. There is no consensus at this point, but there is some evidence that suggests that at least some spread occurs from subclinical cases. TTYD.

Agree w Dr. Novick: Vaccine is in development at this time. Currently there have been no cases of leprosy which are resistant to multi-drug tx. Multi-drug therapy for multibacillary leprosy is usually Dapsone, Rifampicin &amp; Clorazime. Other antibiotics can be used. Fewer antibiotics may be used for other forms of leprosy. Multi-drug therapy continues to be an effective treatment for leprosy.

Leprosy is bacteria: Leprosy is caused by a bacteria so you can not cure it with plastic surgery. Leprosy can leave some damaged tissue and scars once it is treated and plastic surgery can help in this setting.
