Long enough: The effect of immitrex should be several houirs, long enough to resolve a headache.  It can be given as a second dose in 2-4 hours.  It should be given with a non steroidal antiinflammmatory such as Ibuprofen or naprosyn, (naproxen) to supplement its effect and speed relief.

In a way: There does seem to be a waxing and waning effect of many headache medications, and a drug that works well for years can become less effective with time.  In addition, using Imitrex (sumatriptan) more than 2-3 times per week can lead to the development of a medication overuse headache, which is very difficult to effectively treat.  You may wish to consider adding a prophylactic medication.

4 migraine: 4 migraine rx. 50 mg doses, tabletn nasel spray, injection (single ues auto injectors), there may b a xdermal patch also.

Rx med. Oral is least effective due @ GI breakdown

many side effects tho minor, some r fatal & involve the heart coronary vasospasm, tho main effect is intracranial & basilar arteries.
 Main receptors r located in these, and the rx causes constriction of these arteries=releaf.

Should not: The main problem with taking anything everyday as a treatment for a migraine is that it can cause rebound headaches. This is even true of triptans, but to a lesser degree.  If you are having migraines everyday you need to be on a prophylactic medicine. A medicine to prevent migraines. You may have to go through a period of increased headaches as you stop that daily treatment. I get them too!

Max = 200mg per day: You can take up to 100mg of Imitrex (sumatriptan) by mouth for migraine headaches and then repeat it again in 2 hours if the headache recurs for a maximum of 200mg by mouth every 24 hours. Any medication could have harmful effects, especially if you overdose. If you feel Imitrex (sumatriptan) isn't working for you, there are other options available. I recommend talking to your doctor for more information.

Recommended dosage: The "triptans" such as Imitrex (sumatriptan) can be used no more than 2 tabs in a given 24 hours...Some people have prolonged attacks of migraines needing to use it for couple of days in a row...So, if you are young and healthy otherwise, a couple of days of use should be ok. However, the need to use for few days suggests  u should consult doc for a better regimen..Preventive care rx...Good luck.

Not ideal: Imitrex (sumatriptan) is not supposed to be used for routine use,  it is not prevention of migraines nor supposed to be used daily.  It narrows blood vessels to treat the migraines and can have affects on circulation,  there are better options to look at prevention.

Imitrex (sumatriptan) SE: chest and other pressure sensations, vertigo, parasthesia, stomach pain, headache and confusion. Is a great abortive drug to treat episodic migraine headache.
