Depends: If you completed the primary series in childhood & have had one within five years you can probably just wash out a simple wound & not worry.If you have never had the series & have a dirty wound u could see the tetanus begin to set up over a day or so, so a shot & anti-toxin might be needed within hours.If u fall in the middle, get it done within 48hrs, but do a good job of cleaning the wound 1st.

No: You get tetanus when a wound is infected by tetanus germs that make a toxin.Tetanus spores are widely distributed in nature, more often found in soil, but also in other areas. A pen ink would not carry tetanus spores, yet a wound created by a puncture wound (from a pen) could be contaminated from another source.

Depends on situation: If you have not had a booster within the last 10 yrs, you should consider one after any wound that might allow tetanus spores ( that are in the dust or dirt) a chance to get under your skin.Wounds involving garden tools, dirt, & dirty environments are the most worrisome. A simple jab in your skin from a pin or staple is not so worrisome.

Unlikely to be a pbm: Your vaccination within 3 years will protect you from any risk of tetanus. The spores responsible for tetanus can be found anywhere  but are more common in the soil.Any break in the skin can be an opporttunity for tetanus spores or other germs to cause problems.Simple wound care at the time is often adequate to avoid problems.

Tetanus: It is possible to get tetanus especially if the skin is broken. If you haven' t had a tetanus shot in the last ten years make sure you get onr.

Minimal Risk: Given your description it doesn't sound like your foot was punctured by the object. If that is true there is minimal risk with this exposure. Either way you should make sure you are up to date with tetanus vaccine.

Yes.: Tetnus immunization generally provides 5 years of strong immunity, and ten years of some immunity.  however, not everyone achieves the same level of immunity.

If your childhood : Immunizations were completed according to CDC recommendations &amp; your last Tdap booster was at 11-12 years, you are due for another Tdap. Rust doesn't caused tetanus; the bacterium Clostridium tetani, commonly found in soil, dust &amp; manure, does when it enters the skin through a puncture wound or cut by a contaminated object.

Any wound at risk: The development of tetanus requires a breach in the integrity of the skin(a cut) and contamination of that cut by tetanus spores. A clean blade or object, cutting contaminated skin, or a clean wound  touched by contaminated fingers, sets the stage for spores to germinate in the wound and produce tetanus.The wound is the issue not the ink. A booster within the last 10 yrs is protective.
