Ovulation?: Many women have occasional variation of their mucus discharge, some spotting between periods, a heavier period, a lighter period, or even a missed period.  Having one or two of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean there is a medical problem, but a visit to one’s primary care or ob-gyn doctor is a good idea if symptoms are persistent, recurring, or worrisome.

Hormones: The brown spotting may have been an abnormal period from a hormonal fluctuation that just threw your cycle off.  A negative home pregnancy test pretty much rules out a pregnancy (or at least rules out implantation from a fertilized egg).  Wait for your next cycle and if things don't return to normal, go see PCP or Gyno

Unlikely: The test results you provided suggest no pregnancy. If you intend to be pregnant or could become pregnant, you should consult an OB doctor for starting antenatal vitamins and ask her/him about exposure to nitrous oxide in very early pregnancy.

Not your period.: Get another HPT,  10 days after your expected period to rule out implantation bleeding and pregnany. If HPT negative then hormonal imbalance , cervicitis , cervical cancer, fibroid tumor, cervical polyps, other infections involving reproductive system to be ruled out.

In some periods, you may see a variation where before a period comes you may see a few days of brownish and or pinkish stain. please see what happens in the next cycle if your test is negative. Irregular bleeding is  one of the most common problems Obgyns treat.: If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections &  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  there are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.
