Several options: There are several options available for surgical skin prep. Many surgeons have actually moved away from iodine based preps to a combination of alcohol and chlorhexidene. Just make sure you tell your surgeon and the or nurses about your allergy.

i am allergic to shrimp but can eat crab and fish. i am also allergic to seaweed. also very allergic to iodine swab on skin. can i take fish oil??

Relative....: People who have allergies to shellfish or fish have a relative contraindication to taking fish oil supplements and they should proceed with caution when considering taking them.

pancreatic head soft tissue mass, with peripheral infiltrative changes and extension to/from colon at hepatic flexure. whats this? ctscan result without contrast, allergic to iodine! is the intravenous with iodine ok for me to have? mri scheduled?

: If allergic reaction is only with rash, not anaphylactic reaction then you can still have CT with IV contrast by preparing with benadryl and prednisone before the procedure. MRI is a good alternative if you have bad allergic reaction to iodine. Please note that allergic to sea foods is not the same as allergic to iodine. Good luck.

can oral providone iodine be used for skin disinfection or is it mouth only ? i have only that and some small wounds to treat.

Yes: Yes.   Be sure to have your "wounds" checked by a doctor unless they are very minor.     I would feel more comfortable if I knew what wounds you are referring to.

can a diet low in iodine cause small fetal head @ 32 weeks? i'm concerned that tech said head is small but doctor said she's on track. i'm scared!!!!!

Clarify : Before you start deciding that there is a problem contact your doctor and ask for clarification. From what you are saying the doctor said everything was normal and that there is no problem.

if i put iodine on a mole, would the mole eventually fall off? i also wondered if i should surround the mole w/ vasoline to protect the skin.

Mole Removal: Iodine placed on a mole will not cause the mole to fall off. The only way to remove a mole correctly is surgical excision.

if a person has a growth on their skin and they applied generous amounts of lugol's iodine on it several times a day for a couple of weeks before seeing a doctor can that affect the results of a biopsy? if so how?

is betadine skin cleanser (povidone iodine 7.5%) safe as a facial wash?

Accepted Answer

Not a good idea...: Betadine is a skin disinfectant used prior to surgery.  It is likely too harsh to use everyday and some people even become allergic to it.  I would not recommend you use it as a routine facial wash.
