The stress of surgery often flares COPD depending how long and what anesthesia was used. You must be careful with giving O2

Low oxygen...: People with COPD can develop low oxygen levels due to their lung disease. Oxygen therapy is then administered in the lowest amount needed to treat their hypoxia. Too much oxygen can actually cause lung toxicity which worsens lung function.

High pulse rate: or tachycardia could be caused by Albuterol inhalation.  If so, you may change this to Ipratropium    and/or inhaled steroids.  Please   discuss with your provider the side effects of your medications.

Going up on narcotic: is generally not a good idea. That is already getting to be a large dose. People with lung disease need as much breathing as possible and narcoticcs lowers the drive to breath (bad).

Not neccesary: But if you have significant gastric reflux it can cause sorethroat & can cause damage to your lungs even fibrosis & bronchiectasis. Get evaluated.

my father is a copd patient, from few days he has saturation level ranging from 60s to late 80s .this low saturation is seen usually when he is doing some work .otherwise he will get 70s 80s by itself  . is this fluctuation normal ?

Evaluation: Please contact his Pulmonologist on call. His normal baseline values are part of his medical records, but if he is struggling to breathe, please proceed to the Emergency Room. He should avoid over exertion until seen.

Depends on patient: Oxygen in tanks is "100% oxygen", and should be considered a medication. The amount of "100% oxygen" used varies from patient to patient. The oxygen from the tank mixes with air from the environment, so that a patient breathes in somewhat enriched air. Doctors do worry that if a COPD patient gets too much oxygen, he will take fewer breaths per minute, and make his carbon dioxide level go too high.

Possible: It is possible but very difficult. There are many factors influencing outcome. Mental status, nutrition, extend of lung disease, cause of lung disease, coexisting infections or heart diseases.

Yes: Patient with COPD with po2 55, pco2 of 65, has hypoxemia and hypercapnia ( low oxygen, high co2) which are bad. We may have to look at the clinical condition of the patient to determine whether he needs a bipap or needs intubation.

Usually not: Check with the doctor to make sure the patient does not have a tendency to retain carbon dioxide. Also, it is best to have an oximeter, a device that measures oxygen levels, with you. It will allow you to use just enough, not more not less.
