If your BMI is above 30, those symptoms may imply a mouth breather and possible obstructive sleep apnea, especially you are sleepy during the day time. However, dry throat and lip along with hoarse voice could be due to low volume (dehydration).

: When you lie on your back there is some compression of the lung meaning  less volume so that may trigger the need for a deep breath. Side sleeping is better. May also be sleep apnea so would be evaluated for that especially if you snore. or due to reflux. Would follow up with  MD for assessment

Sleep apnia is one: possibility.  Your doc can order a sleep study if he/she thinks it necessary.  Air quality is a factor, especially dryness.  Try a humidifier when sleeping.  Peace and good health.

Sleep apnea: Sleep apnea (stopping breathing in sleep) is a common condition which can cause this, and can be quite dangerous. Other symptoms include snoring and daytime sleepiness/fatigue. Gastro-esophageal reflux can also cause this, as can panic attacks in sleep.

i can wake up during the night and it feels like i'm holding my breath but i don't know if i stop breathing or not. is this worrying?

Probably do: It does sound like sleep apnea and everytime you realize that it is happening there are times when you are not able to realize because you could be in deeper sleep.  This can be dangerous.  See a physician and let them know so you can have a sleep test (either at home or in a sleep lab).

See doc.: Probably not related to service in Iraq, but a cough like this needs explanation. Consider chest X ray, pulmonary function testing to evaluate for asthma, infection and tumors.  This could also represent sins disease , allergy or even acid reflux.  You will need a doc's help to get to the bottom of this.
