if my sural nerve is damaged, why is my lower leg and ankle swollen?i thought it was a sensory nerve?should i stay off of it?what is the tx anyway?

Sural nerve: Sural nerve runs on the outside of the lower leg to base of 5th metatarsal. It not commonly injured unless you had a lateral ankle injury, such as, an ankle sprain. Then you can have ligament, tendon or even a fracture which would explain the swelling. Either way, you should see a foot and ankle specialist.

sural neuropathy post ankle surgery. braces irritate sural nerve; can i have a custom brace made that will provide stability but not irritate nerve?

Likely: Talk to your surgeon, and consult with an orthotist.  Lots of potential modifications.

is it possible to have disc extrusion, severe stenosis w/caudal migration contacting bilateral nerve roots + hamstring weakness/tightness + intermittent radiating pain & marked sural nerve deficit , yet emg be normal and show no radiculopathy?

: EMG testing displays full pathology in about 3-4 weeks, subsequent to sufficiently severe nerve damage.  If a problem has not progressed fully, the testing could be negative.  Regarding "severe stenosis", see a spinal surgeon to plan appropriate interventional steps.  Physical therapy may be the next approach.

i had my sural nerve entrapment surgery approximately 10 years ago. now i am experiencing terrible pain in the ankle and the bottom of my foot. do you think its related and what kind of doctor should i see?

: Unlikely any relationship between prior sural nerve issues and current problems.  Perhaps ankle issues are the core cause, but too many other possibilities to be more precise based on these symptoms.  A podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon would be most appropriate consultants.  Start with your primary doctor and get some baseline evaluations first, however.

i have a male friend in his  fifties.  both his lower legs are swollen hard and are turning black what could cause this and is it treatable ?

Hard to say: As this most commonly would be related to vascular issues, possibly arterial or venous or both.  But his best bet is first see a doctor to better identify the cause, as it very well may not be related to anything previously mentioned, and to be able to better guide you/him, the actually cause of his symptoms are very important. if you have blood pooling in legs which makes them turn red, do you think it would be the deep veins causing this issue, and if so, is it treatable by surgery? are valves in legs repairable also? many thanks?

Accepted Answer

: The symptoms as stated above suggests one might have problem with the Circulatory System in the lower extremities. Besides a good evaluation by the PCP, a Vascular Consult might also have to be seen and more specific questions can then be answered. There are good solutions for most of the potential problems that might be detected.

hi, my twin baby girls born 5 days back. one baby is missing fibula bone and one finger in her right leg. moreover, the tibia bone is also not straight and it has caused the right leg be around 5 cm shorter than left one. please advise if treatable?

: A Pediatric Orthopedic consultation is recommended. Images may be interpreted by a Pediatric radiologist. A treatment and rehabilitation plan will then be formulated. The hips should be examined and a complete physical exam is suggested. Ensure adequate Vitamin D and Calcium intake.

foot op - due to broken bone, then wore a cast, but after diagnosed with clot in sural vein. doctors removed the cast to treat. is this advisable?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Last thing you want is a clot in your veins that can dislodge and travel to the lungs and cause pulmonary emboli. That is more important than a broken foot for sure.

Yes: Please consult an orthopedist who is more special used in sports injury. By arthroscopy it is treatable, will need extensive physical therapy.
