Maybe nuerologic: True weakness implies something neurological.  Compression of peripheral nerves (such as carpal tunnel syndrome or toxic nerve injury) can cause hand weakness.  Injury to the central nervous system (such as spinal cord injury) can cause weakness.  Questions such as length of time, loss of sensation and other symptoms can help figure it out.  A good physical exam and history by your doc can help.

i am 26 years old and have lost strength in my hands. i find it difficult performing simple tasks such as opening a soda bottle.also pain in palms?

Many possibilities: Nerve problems in the neck or in the arm can cause these problems. Muscles problems can also do this. You should see your primary doctor.You may need to see a specialist, but which one depends on your whole story and exam (spine specialist, hand & arm, neurologist, etc).

Several causes: If the symptoms come &amp; go, that is usually a good sign (rather than constant symptoms) . If you do a lot of keyboard or factory work or other repetitive hand/wrist motion it could be carpal tunnel syndrome which is helped by use of night wrist splints &amp; possibly ice &amp; anti inflammatory meds.  If hand grips keep weakening or numbness more constant you need Dr eval &amp; possibly nerve testing

this common condition can represent several different diagnoses. But, one does not have to live with this annoying symptom usually.

Make a fist or 2 :): Keep it simple at first. Most people have a spongy ball lying around. If not, they might have a tennis ball or one of similar size for a child or grandchild. Simply place in hand and squeeae it while walking, talking, watching tv. Of course, if there has been some injury to that hand, it is best to see a physical therapist or other expert about specific do's and don'ts.  And stop if there is pain.

Fine motor: You haven't given your child's age. Developmentally, this may be normal at this point. Your pediatrician can tell you if it is normal or delayed. If there is delay, then occupational and physical therapy is usually helpful.

Likely: The extremity used most tend to develop more muscle and be slightly stronger, tho not always evident. Weight lifting is great to build muscle but do not use heavier weights on the "weaker" arm to compensate; use same weights on both sides and your strength will soon equalize.

There is an : Association between loss of hand strength if it is the significant factor not captured by another description of deficit or injury and impairment rating. Check the ama guides for evaluation of impairment for better detail.
