Probably not: While allergies could account for some of your symptoms it sounds as if you may be developing a throat infection, especially if antihistamines don't help your symptoms, which you could try. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids and see yor physician f your symptoms worsen.

Possibilities....: You may have acute bronchitis, an infection of the airways, which could result in cough with sputum production as well as a sore throat. You could also have a sinus problem with post-nasal drip which then causes you to cough. See your doctor to find out which it is and to be treated.

Globus sensation?: Do you experience the feeling of a ball or lump in the back of your throat that you have to swallow past? If so, this is "globus."  alternatively, you may have laryngo-esophaeal reflux without heartburn. Sometimes, the actual swallowing mechanism may be impaired due to "spasms" or dysmotility. A gastroenterologist or ear-nose-throat specialist is a good starting point for evaluation.

Dr. can check throat: Throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or other virus (antibiotics usually not used), allergies or irritants, sinusitis, stomach reflux when asleep, etc... Usually, a person sees the doctor if the throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep and review the story to see if sinusitis or reflux might be a cause).

Bacterial infection: Dark brown mucous could be dried blood.  I know this may sound scary but I'm guessing you've been coughing a lot and really hard.  Its easy to rupture capillaries or alveoli since that are so very thin.  Capillaries are one cell thick and alveoli 2μm-600 nm.  The throat and ears suggest a sinus infection.  Its best if you see your primary care doctor.

See a doctor : Are you coughing up blood or you have blood in your nasal secretions ? You need further work up if blood coming from the lungs, chest x ray, etc.If it is in your nasal secretions a course of antibiotics for sinusitis might bd needed. The best thing is to see a doctor and have an exam in the office. Please dot smoking.

Allergic sinusitis: The child might have started with allergic sinusitis then the post nasal drainage caused bronchitis. For sinusitis he can use a nasal spray or Claritin Syrup and for bronchitis use Zitromas oral suspension 250 mg first day and 125 mg for 4 days

Productive cough: Typically, a cough productive of colored sputum suggests infection. It could be coming from the lungs however most often, in non-smokers and young persons it is coming from a sinus infection. To make an accurate diagnosis a physical examination is needed. Sometimes nasal rinsing with saline will improve these symptoms. Products such as neilmed or netipot are available over-the-counter.
