i have copd and need to clear phlegm from throat. what is the best method with which to do this?

Don't smoke: Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do to decrease sputum production. Using anti-inflammatory medications such as advair or symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) can also help in some cases as can treating any and all infections early.

does a runny nose, sore throat, and cough with sputum/phlegm sound like copd or more likely just a common cold? i seem to get sick every couple months

Not COPD: There are a number of things that can cause the symptoms you describe.  This winter here in the Midwest has been cold and dry, and those environmental factors can aggravate your upper airway.

At your age, you don't have COPD.  My guess is you've had a tough winter season.  Any other concerns, see your physician.

May be GERD: = acid reflux: consult your PCP for further evaluation and testing.

Unlikely: COPD takes years to develop so this is probably not that.  This is probably combination of allergies and poorly controlled asthma.  I suggest follow up with your doctor so that you get proper inhalers and perhaps pulmonary function tests to gauge severity of asthma.  Congrats on stopping smoking!

Many different cause: Though these care common symptoms of early COPD (chronic bronchitis) there are many other reasons for this. Smoking of course is a prime cause but work related causes are also suspect. If he works in a factory or other workplace where there is a lot of dust or other things (ie sawdust, chemicals, etc) you may want to start there. Either way, to make sure have him tested by a physician.

This is serious : Enough to see u pulmonologist  or at least u pcp for evaluation.

Dark specks might: indicate the presence of blood. It is highly recommended you ask you doctor for a chest X-ray

i have end stage copd,  my symptoms are worst. i can't cough up phlegm now, but hear gurgling every time i breath, worst at bed.  concerned....?

Need to be checkedER: With your symptoms you need to get checked by your doctor or a pulmonologist, as you may need examination and chest xray and arterial blood gas studies
as you have cardiomyopathy and hypertension as well and may have fluid in your lungs and may need diuretics and oxygen after evaluation by your doctor, if you can not get an appointment with your doctor go to er.

Not likely: Chances are that you do not have COPD after three years of smoking, unless you smoke 4 packs a day or have other underlying conditions that could predispose you to copd. But if you are having new symptoms of shortness of breath then you should get checked out.

Antibiotics: Please stay home, rest and drink fluids, If you experience  a fever, please see your physician for testing.
A course of antibiotics based on your culture can be prescribed to treat bacterial bronchitis. Watch for signs of shortness of breath, worsening cough and blood in the sputum. Have a yearly TB test to rule out TB as one cause.
