Possibilities...: Possible etiologies of this cough includes gerd, post-nasal drip. Bronchospasm from any cause can also contribute. If you are smoking, smoking cessation to decrease airway inflammation is needed. See your doctor so this cough can be diagnosed and the proper treatment rendered.

Sounds normal: Sounds pretty normal to me.  You could treat the cough with some over the counter cough medicines.  Lots of fluids, lots of rest.

: What you described is not normal. You may try steam/vapor inhalation to facilitate the clearance of mucus. Drink enough water to stay hydrated. If it is not getting better in a couple of days, it would be prudent to see your doctor.

Mucinex (guaifenesin): If you have a simple cold and are coughing up mucus, it is best to take medicines that make the mucus more watery and easier for you to cough up.  Cough suppressants will simply stop you from coughing, but leave all the mucus sitting in your chest. If the symptoms do not go away or worsen, or if you have a high fever, you may need to see your doctor for antibiotics.

Bronchitis/rhinitis: May be either or both. This is residual of acute illness which you had. Try decongestant.

Chronic cough: Cough lasting for several weeks is suspicious for pertussis or whooping cough. Both parent and infant need to be evaluated.

: It looks like your doctor does not see need for anything other than OTC meds however you could do other things to shorten the course of the acute bronchitis if you know what could be the cause. I mean there is no fixed number of days if you know what to do like removing or mitigating factors like smoking, fumes or dust or whatever else that may be causing the inflammation.
