since weaning my son 6 months ago, i have had lingering breast pain that feels almost like mastitis but never worsens. it comes and goes. no lumps, redness, warmth, or discharge. some days it hurts under my arm as well, but the pain is not constant.

Obtain breast exam: You need to have your breasts examined by an  OB GYN MD to determine the cause for your concern. It is difficult, if not impossible, to "guess" as to the source of your breast pain.

Yes.: Any breast lump that is new should be evaluated by your primary care physician and mammogram/ultrasound if indicated.  Breast pain has other benign causes too.

Fibrocystic changes: You could have fibrocystic changes. This is the most common cause of breast pain.  It can be aggravated by caffeine, stress, menstrual cycle and hormonal supplements. In addition, you may want to get fitted by a bra specialist to make sure you have the right size, which will make you more comfortable. Vitamin e works for breast pain in some.

Get it checked: This is something you don't want to mess around with.  Even though you are only 20, you need to be sure it isn't cancer.  Perhaps you were injured - do you remember getting hit in that area?  Nevertheless, go see a doctor.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without examining you and your symptoms warrant evaluation by a physician. What you described is not a sign of cancer, but you should still see your doctor.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex. 
Get HPV vaccine

Needs eval: Even though no lump, would still recommend being seen and evaluated.  Family history of breast cancer?  Taking hormones?  Trauma?  Prior biopsies? Certain meds can also cause this.  Your physician should further assess.
