11/30/21 blood test showed tsh level 4.693, followup from same lab 3/15/22 gave tsh value 1.723. both taken early morning second test fasted overnight first test had small amount of food before. is that much change is such a short time normal?

Accepted Answer

: Eating tends to lower TSH but other thyroid parameters may not be affected. I must confess that I don't ask patients to fast before a thyroid panel is drawn, but I never only order a TSH, but have the entire thyroid panel drawn every 3 months if the patient is on treatment. For screening purposes I feel a TSH, T4 &amp; T3 suffice and am satisfied if all are within normal limits.

without weight loss, diarrhea or blood is it normal to have a little bit of food in stool? i have had stool exam, colons copy, blood test all normal.

Accepted Answer

Food in the stool: Some foods are not digested well.  A classic example would be corn which frequently comes out like it goes in.

glucose 83. all other blood test results are within the range (blood; hormones etc) but hb1ac level is 5.8. vit d is a bit lower than normal (63 nmol/l). i exercise and i m rather fit (size small). am i prediabetic or should i repeat the result?

: It's common to see this pattern and that's the reason we're no longer base on fasting glucose level (FBS) alone for diagnosing type 2 diabetes mellitus. If you have a glucometer you can check your blood sugar 2 hours after a regular meal. If it is more than 140, you probably have glucose intolerance or borderline DM. If you don't have a glucometer, have HbA1c retested. Your vitamin D is perfect.

i had two bites of chicken breast 5 hours before a blood test. my cholesterol came out much higher than last year. im wondering if the results could have been affected by the small amount of chicken i ate 5 hours before. thankyou?

: Yes they would be affected. Best to repeat when you are really fasting. Best to have a 14 hour fast where you have only water in the 14 hours before the test.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: Elevate CRP is generally a sign of inflammation in the body. Unless the food or drink causes inflammation, e.g., taking gluten by a gluten sensitive person, food and drink do not raise CRP.

Yes: Eating before having blood drawn affects the results of glucose, and lipids among other analytes.

Accepted Answer

Yes: But make sure that they are not testing for igg or igg 4 to food since this may well be a protective antibody against allergy to the food or just an indicator of exposure.   If you want a blood tests, ask the doctor to order immunocap ige to that food.

Liver result: Hi there,

You need to send us the liver results. We can tell from the pattern of ggt to alt/ast whether the culprit is alchohol, your gallbladder, your liver etc. The culprit is not always alcohol. Lipids are also a huge concern, as are drugs and autoimmune diseases amongst others. Please arrange a consult/appt with us and we can be more specefic as to why the liver result is abnormal.

No: These tests help to determine kidney function, degree of hydration.

is there a simple blood test for food allergies?

Accepted Answer

Yes.: The rast (radioallergosorbent test) detects the presence of ige antibodies to a specific allergen.  A score taken from the rast test is compared to predictive values, and if it is higher, the patient has a >95% chance of an allergic reaction to that allergen.  This can test many allergens at one time.  Values are available for the following foods: milk, egg, peanut, fish, soy, and wheat.
