Hyperthyroidism: If you are treated for hyperthyroidism and have the issues you report you must see your doctor as soon as possible to see what is happening and get your thyroid levels under control.

when i don't eat enough food i get lightheaded, dizzy, and feel like i am about to pass out. what could it be? could it be low blood sugar?

Low blood sugar: the only way you can really tell if it is low blood sugar is to do a glucose check when you are feeling shaky or lightheaded.  I would suggest just making sure you eat a snack or a protein bar when you are feeling this way.  Always eat a good breakfast in the morning.  It starts off your day in the right way. Probably not: Probably not. You don't usually feel high blood sugar unless its super high. Your body is just probably making a little extra Insulin to compensate for the blood sugar spike. This will make you feel a bit shaky and even dizzy. If you want to be sure, check your blood sugar when you are feeling the dizziness.

Glycemic index: The speed that glucose gets into your system can trigger symptoms and sometimes a rebound hypoglycemia.  The glycemic index of different foods refers to that speed.  For example, a baked potato enters the system very quickly, but butter on the potato slows absorption of the sugars. Similar with white bread compared to wheat pita bread.  Consider looking into foods with a lower glycemic index.

Proper workup: Not all phyiscians know how to do a hypoglycemia workup, either fasting or postprandial. Missing an insulinoma will kill you. Even postprandial syndrome, which this might be, needs to be diagnosed and managed. Please get specialist consultation -- perhaps an endocrinology visit is in order.

Doctor can evaluate: A pediatrician or family medicine doctor can evaluate to see where the problem is coming from. A person can start by eliminating added sugar from the diet. Limit fruit juice to 6 or 8 ounces a day, and replace the other sugared drinks with plain water. Not drinking enough water can lead to dizziness symptoms. Avoid processed foods, or choose those with the least amount of added sugar.

Symptoms: It may sound strange but I suggest you first see a psychologist. Either she/he will recognize and help control your problems or will recommend a neurologist to help you.

Best to eat ...: 69 y/o says Hubby did not eat for entire day &amp; felt dizzy, etc. N/F sugar was 52. Ate and was fine in 10 min. Random readings good. Can this be a 1 time thing? Could be only one time if he stops going all  day without eating &amp; possibly drinking fluids. The chances for recurrence are higher if he goes without food. Best to eat regular meals  x 3 daily.
