Hypothyroidism: No, it is not scary.  The physician will ask about symptoms of hypothyroidism (fatigue, weight gain, constipation, feeling cold, dry skin, etc.) do an exam of your neck to check the thyroid and some other tests such as tendon reflexes.  Then a blood test will be done to check thyroid hormone levels.  The results of all this information will be put together and a diagnosis then made.

Hypothyroid: Signs are dry skin, coarse hair, constipation, lethargy, cold intolerance, forgetfulness, depression, mood swings, weight gain. Scalp hair loss and irregular menses also occur.

Take replacement: Most hypothyroidism is due to primary thyroid failure. If you are truly hypothyroid you need to take levothyroxine replacement. Ask your doctor first what type of hypothyroidism you have. Rarely it may be temporary or due to a deficiency of the pituitary hormone TSH which may be accompanied by other hormone deficiencies.

Several: The most common cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis which is an auto-immune disorder.Other causes,which would not apply to you based on your question, include:radioactive iodine treatment,radiation therapy to neck,medications(amiodorone,interferon,lithium).Keep follow up with your doctor to get your treatment.Best wishes.

No: If you're still symptomatic you should ask your doctor when it would be appropriate to recheck your thyroid tests.  Usually we check patients within 6-8 weeks of a dose change. You may need more medication, or, there may be a reason unrelated to hypothyroidism for your symptoms.

i've an hypothyrodism.i started with levo 25mcg from 5daysbut never change.my weight is increasing so far.how long does it take for it to start workng?

A while, ?underdosed: B"sd 25 mcg is a small dose, usually I usually  reserve for the elderly or heart patients.  In any case the 1/2 life of thyroxine is about 14 days, so it takes about 2 months to steady state.  Glad to discuss details.
