Not a fixed number!: Bone marrow cellularity tends to be very variable in different people and there is room for sampling error as the marrow is not a uniform sheet of cell; instead it is normally quite patchy. if your blood counts(CBC) are normal, then the cause of your weight loss is not related to your Bone marrow cellularity. Look for other causes...elsewhere in the body.

Many possibilities: Could be genetic causes or an acquired stem cell injury from viruses, toxins, or chemicals that leads to a quantitative or qualitative abnormality.

Not enough cells: The bone marrow is the factory of the blood -- all blood cells begin life there. The "normal" amount of cells decreases with age, so we estimate normal as 100 - (age) +/- 20%. So, if a 50 year old has 50% of the space in the bone marrow filled with cells, we say this is normal. If it were 25%, it would be hypocellular. However, if a 90 year old had 25% cellularity, it is probably normal. Helps?

Not enough cells: This means there are not as many blood-producing cells as would be expected for a person of this age.
Cellularity % refers to the amount of space in the bone marrow occupied by blood producing cells.
In general, you can estimate the EXPECTED cellularity of bone marrow as 100-Age. For example, a normal 20 year old might have about 80%  ; a normal 90 yo 10%.

There are many causes for that such as age, infection, drug, cancer, lymphoma, leukemia, and bone marrow disorders. For example, hepatitis virus can cause acquired aplastic anemia, typically presented with hypocellular bone marrow.

Hypocellular marrow: The normal bone marrow is a mixture of cells and fat.  Hypocellular marrow means the marrow has fewer cells in the bone marrow space that is expected for that patient's age.
There are many causes for this including nutritional deficiencies, bone marrow failure syndomes, pre-leukemia (myelodysplasia), prior chemotherapy, toxins and medications.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, it depends. Bone marrow has focal areas of mostly fat.  Depending on your other blood tests, it may not be cause for concern.

Bone marrow: Bone marrow cellularity refers to how much of the marrow is making blood cells, and how much is fat. As people age, it tends to decline and move more centrally. Severe hypocellularity may indicate aplastic anemia or even leukemia, which needs treatment. Lesser degrees may or may not, depending on other symptoms and lab findings.
