Different Glands: "Para" means next to.  Next to the thyroid gland lie 4 tiny glands called parathyroid glands, which regulate calcium levels.  The thyroid make thyroid hormone; hyperthyroidism is having too much thyroid hormone.  The parathyroids make parathyroid hormone; hyperPARAthyroidism is having too much parathyroid hormone, leading to high calcium levels, or hypercalcemia.

Not usual: Thoigh names are close hey are different hormones and have very different actions and levels. It is not usual to check both at the same time. PTH has to be ordered. Your symptoms are not typical of hyperparathyroidism but a simple lab can be done.

In general, symptoms are controlled with a medicine called propranolol, and the overactive thyroid is controlled with either methimazole (Tapazole) or propylthiouracil (PTU). But that all depends on the individual. For some, no treatment is needed, others need more treatment.
