Neck problem: Sounds like you have a neck problem.  Maybe degeneration.  If you have hypersensitivity, you should get neck MRI to evaluate.  Consider steroids or therapy to release pressure in nerve.

Muscular: Inflammation or strain of the mastoid portion of the sternocleidomastoid muscle due to posture, position while watching tv, strain.
Also, it is possible to be arthritis at the first cervical vertebra.

From simple 2 seriou: There are many questions that would need to be asked to give idea what is causing this. It could be neck muscle tension, sinusitis (see my answer relating to referred pain), migraine, tension ha...If associated with sore throat and fever, meningitis. If worst pain ever got there, subarachnoid hemorrhage, or brain aneurysm. Anything suddenly new, or severe, in that area has to be evaluated urgently.

Neck pain: Yes it suggests a musculoskeletal problem.

is it normal that i can feel a ~8mm thick suture line on the back right side of my skull, but only a much smaller one on the left?

Accepted Answer

Suture lines: You really shouldn't be able to feel any of the "suture lines" on your skull through your scalp. My guess is you are probably feeling something else. If you are having symptoms related to it, you could get an examination, but otherwise you are probably feeling a variant of normal anatomy.

20 month old son has indent in back of skull.  otherwise normal, behaviorally and physically.  is this indentation serious?  should we treat it?

Hard to say: I would have to examine what you consider an indent to see if it is. All infants/people have a significant ridge at the back/base of the skull that drops off as the normal skull surrounds its base.

i have a divot on the top, back part of my skull. it wasn't always there. i've had it for a couple of years now. is there something wrong with me?

Divot on skull: Do any of your relatives have the same thing? Show to your Drs and see what they say.

See details: If you are concerned, have a doctor take a look. It is difficult to suggest anything more without being able to examine the area first hand.

Occipital neuralgia: Suspect the neck is primary cause of your symptoms.  a better pillow can help at night.,choose one that offers support is varied,positions. See your doc for a cervical spine x Ray evaluations degenerative changes. PT can help,strengthen cervical muscles after the evaluation. 
Occipital nerves at the base of the skull come out between cervical spines.

i get a very  sharp headache at the top of my skull when i straighten back up after i bend over, not when bent over.  lasts 10 seconds, goes away.  ?

See your doctor: Pain that severe needs to be worked up by your doctor in person.  He/she will listen to you, perform an examination and possibly order some tests to see what's wrong with you.
