Not very specific: Hyperglycemia can be a sign of inflammation or systemic stress. This can be caused by many, many conditions, one of which can be septic shock. But, really any condition can also cause hyperglycemia: pneumonia, heart attack, stroke, blood clots, etc. So, it is not a good marker to tell if you have septic shock.

Sometimes, however, HYPOglycemia (too low) can be associated with septic shock. FYI.

No  : Hi. No, hyperglycemia is a sign of DIABETES! A severe illness like septic shock can bring out diabetes in a previously undiagnosed person, but NO ONE would ever say hyperglycemia is a sign of septic shock. WHY septic shock can cause the expression of hyperglycemia is because septic shock greatly ramps up stress hormones (cortisol &amp; epinephrine) that antagonize insulin...ergo, diabetes.

Not an indicator: There is a association with hyperglycemia and worse survival with sepsis. So tight blood sugar control was thought better. Sometime Insulin infusions are used to control blood sugars.  So hyperglycemia not an indication for sepsis but rather a consequence of sepsis and infections sometimes. Need to have adequate bs control.

Collapse: Sepsis occurs when the bacteria is able to reach the blood stream. Septic shock occurs when, as a result of sepsis, the blood pressure collapses and the cardiovascular system fails.

Accepted Answer

Depends...: The length of time between sepsis and septic shock is variable and it depends on what organism is causing the sepsis since some organisms are more virulent than others. It also depends on the treatment of the sepsis. If proper anti microbial therapy is given, the sepsis will not continue on to septic shock.

Many WBCs: The main thing it will show is many white blood cells.  However, this is seen with any infection.  There may or may not be defective red blood cells due to the inflammation and toxins from the pathogen.  Sepsis is determined by vital signs and a source of infection.  Septic shock is when there is also at least one organ severely affected or failing (usually temporary).

Varies: White cell count could be low, high or normal. Hemoglobin is likely to be low or dropping. Immature and damaged cells are noted. There is something called a left shift, a change in the relative proportions of different white cells. Bandemia may be noted. Platelets high, normal, or low.

Similar: Septic shock can occur with many types of bacteria including Meningococcal bacteria, other bacteria, fungal infections and even viruses. They have in common an overwhelming immune response which causes innocent bystander damage to normal organ function.

since 2017 - appendix cancer; severe pancreatitis; addisons disease; 3rd stage kidney failure; cirrhosis of the liver; septic shock w/adrenal insufficiency. and again sepsis w/adrenal insufficiency. only specialists see me. any recommendations?

my father is recovering from severe sepsis and septic shock. attack was post uti, but otherwise out of the blue. back home. any precautions now?

Accepted Answer

Prevention is key: I'm glad to hear he has done well, recovered and is back home.
There shouldn't be any special precautions other than preventing recurrence of a severe uti, or getting treatment for it as soon as it appears. Prevention will depend on the cause of UTI (stones, retention from bph, instrumentation, etc). In general, he should drink plenty of fluids and follow up with his primary doctor.
