See details: It is a material injected into the knee to reduce osteoarthritic pain. It is called a lubricant but actually it probably works by other mechanisms. For moderate arthritis, it provides reasonably good results about 80% of the time. These improvements last about 6 months. I prefer other types of these injectables as Hyalgan requires 3-5 injections and others require only one injection.

Rare: Viscosupplementation rarely has significant side effects; nonetheless any shot into he joint risks infection and if the material doesn't make it into the joint then you can get an acute flare of pain and inflamation which usually goes away in a day or two.

Yes: There is no problem taking oral steroids after receiving hyalgan. What i would not recommend is having steroid injections into the same joints that just received hyalgan.

Unlikely: These are all similar treatments.  If you failed one the others are unlikely to work.  4 injections of Hyalgan is an unusual number.  Did you complete the recommended treatment?
