HSV 1 infection: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, you have had HSV 1 infection. Since IgM assay did not differentiate between 1 &amp; 2 it is not feasible to say if you have recent HSV 1 infection or recent infection with both HSV 1 and 2.

HSV testing: I think part of your report got cut off. Usually a lab report will state the cut off for where they call a test positive and where it's negative. IgG just means "long term immunity" or past exposure to some germ; whereas IgM means more recent exposure. Each virus or germ has it's own signature -so for the cold sore virus- that's HSV1. If u have it, your IgG will be positive. HSV2 is genital herpes

Can ask: You will need to ask your doctor why this specific test was done. There may have been a reason in your unique circumstance. An HSV IGM would not provide information about exposure in the past. It is test looking for recent infection &lt; 6 weeks ago. It is also not a particularly accurate test.  An HSG IGG is the test for past exposure.

IgM vs IgG: Igm shows an acute infection with the hsv virus. After clearance of the hsv (typically) the body will have a positive igg which simply shows previous infection.

Likely will not: If it was positive in childhood it will likely recede. IgG antibodies are slowly to develop and stay positive. IgM antibodies tend to indicate a more recent infection. All the best.

Maybe: The Ig M titer is the titer that shows initial infection, with time it will change to a positive IgG.
These of course are lab values.  If you have symptoms then it is confirmation of HSV.  HSV 1 is oral or common lip blisters. HSV2 is genital herpes.  Unusual that both HSV 1 and 2 are turning positive at same time. In any event both are ubiquitous in the population.

HSV I and II: HSV I and II can share cross antigenicity, so if you are positive with HSV I,  the IgM for a "new" case of potentially "HSV II" can be confused with a recurrence of HSV I.  The communicability of HSV's is extreme, so exposure will have produced a positive IgM if you have been exposed and the virus was present by 32 days, even without visible or painful lesions in your partner.

HSV testing: The HSV IgM antibody test is notoriously unreliable. Only IgG testing is valid and useful. And no, not everyone has been exposoed or infected. By your age, roughly half of all people have HSV1 (i.e. positive IgG blood test). HSV2 is less common, 10-15% infected by age 30. Genital herpes doesn't usually occur in the pubic area; the scab probably wasn't due to herpes.

Past exposure: The negative IgM level points to no current infection but the positive IgG level points to past exposure and protection (partial) against HSV.

: False positive HSV IgM tests are extremely common -- so much so that herpes and STI experts never use them for HSV testing and advise their patients to ignore IgM results; IgG is the only reliable type of HSV antibody test, and your negative IgG result is reliable -- for sure you do not have HSV. EBV does not do this. It's just a coincidence you had a false pos syphilis test as well.
