But there are no differences in the symptoms, appearance of lesions, or severity of outbreaks from either virus, whether oral or genital.

Less often, however, they can be caused by herpes simplex type 2 (hsv-2), the virus that most often causes genital herpes.

Genital herpes HSV1: These are crucial differences between GH due to HSV1 vs HSV2:  lower recurrence rate (40% never have a second outbreak), less asymptomatic viral shedding, hence low risk of sexual transmission. Virtually all GHSV1 is acquired from oral sex, very rare cases from vaginal sex. Still best to inform prospective partners, but actual transmission risk is very low. Probably no need for ongoing treatment.

2 Versions of Virus: Both are herpes simplex virus.1 is normally in oral area & 2 in genitals but either can be found either place. Most people have been exposed to hsv1 early in life and have very few problems other than occasional cold sores. Hsv1 in the gential area tends to be more painful than in oral area because that area is more sensitive in general. Meds can help treat/prevent both 1&2 in either area.

Herpes virus: Herpes virus type 1 (hsv 1) causes upper respiratory infections, usually manifest as "cold sores", which can spread to the skin. Herpes virus type 2 is a sexually transmitted infection that occurs only in the genital region usually manifesting as a single tender blister or a group (cluster) of tender vesicles on top of red inflammed skin. Hsv1 does not lead to hsv2 infections. Only sex does.

No: Hsv 1 and 2 are different viruses.  One cannot simply "become" the other.  Both viruses, however, can cause outbreaks in both the genitals and around the mouth.

: Even if you have HSV 1, also called oral herpes, it is not a serious matter. Majority of the adult have had HSV 1. Other than cold sores, HSV 1 infection is inconsequential, except in rare instances of immune deficiency.

i have hsv-1 & hsv-2.  what are the risks of giving it to my granddaughter?  i know not to kiss her if i have a cold sore (hsv-1),  however, i am asymptomatic with hsv-2, with is the risk?

Herpes 1 & 2: In general it is from family members that herpes type one is transmitted. So, I am very happy to hear of your concern.  You can shed herpes even when you do not have a sore, so if your outbreaks are frequent you may need to lower the viral shedding with medication.

Herpes type 2 is generally found somewhere in the genital area so I am sure your granddaughter is not at risk there.
