Some chance: Most herpes in this area is type 2. Sometimes type 1 is transmitted by oral contact. Most people already have type 1 but do not experience any symptoms. If you already have type 1, then a new infection must be type 2. You should have been given an oral therapy at the start 1 week ago. You can be tested to determine if you have hsv1 or 2 or both. Very slim: Usually oral hsvi is not shed if not having an outbreak so do not worry if you refrain form oral contact until the lesions are completely healed.

No, not really: Hsv 1 is considered universally present, in most of the adult population, so there isn't much desire or need to test it further. In a research setting, each person (of a couple) would have to have his/her hsv-1 strain (sub-typed) identified, etc., etc...  But, it gets too scientific, too complicated.

Yes: Yes, this is considered the normal pattern for HSV-1. What we generally see is that the outbreaks decrease in frequency over time after the first 12-18 months. From my experience, there's a lot of variability but generally speaking, a lot of people will still get outbreaks once a year, commonly as a result of high stress or an unrelated cold. Absolutely: Oral herpes can occur in the genital area as well and luckily is usually less painful and frequent then genital herpes (hsv-2).  Because oral sex is becoming more common and most men and women assume its ok to do this unprotected, we do see genital hsv-1.  Prevention of hsv-1 to the genitals and anal region is why dental damns were made.

Yes: Either strain of hsv, 1 or 2, can be oral or genital.  But hsv-2 is typically genital.

: The fact that you had HSV 1 means it is all over your body. It may not be reinfection if it shows in your genitals. it may just be that it is showing up there. It is also possible that you may be infected with HSV 2 which is more likely to manifest in the genitalia.
