my sister has hpv(12other positive) facial warts (just got removed by laser treatment). is hpv facial warts contagious even without sexual contacts? holding hands or touching objects that she touches can be dangerous too? can she hold my newborn baby?

: Facial warts are unusual in adults. Is she immune deficient? At risk for HIV or tested for it? Indirect contact (i.e. shared objects) are unlikely to be a risk for transmission, but direct could be, and she should be very careful if she holds your baby -- and no kissing the baby. If she is immune deficient, perhaps a high HPV viral load, i.e. easier transmission. Discuss w/ baby's doctor.

: There are hundreds of strains of HPV. The ones that cause warts on hands and feet are not high risk.
Get HPV vaccine to prevent infection with high risk strains.

HPV is a wart: The wart virus is a polyoma virus named human papilloma virus hence the name hpv.  There are over 200 different types of  hpv virus known some of which are oncogenic like the genital types 11 and 16 and can lead to cancer.

: There are several strains that produce warts on regular skin, strain 2 &amp; 7 are most often listed. Type 40 is not listed as a genital wart strain.

: It is quite rare if your child's skin is intact but still possible, the risk is higher when the skin is open, such as a cut and it has direct contact with the wart. Flat warts on face are called non genital warts. Genital warts are transmitted via sexual activity (STD).

: HPV test result stays positive indefinitely. If the flat wart is surgically removed that site is no longer a source of transmission.

There are many...: ...Strains of the virus (hpv) that causes warts. Generally speaking, the strains that cause genital warts are not found in facial warts, although that has never been proven, to my knowledge. Gardisil protects against 4 of the strains of hpv that cause genital warts, so even multiple doses of gardisil are unlikely to have any effect on facial warts, one way or the other.

No: All of the strains of the wart virus family are selective in what &amp; where they take up residence. Dog warts only infect dogs, not humans or other animals. Human wart strains are selective to humans as well as the places on the skin where they will infect.

Raised bump: Hpv warts look like a small raised rough bump often white. They can be single or in clusters. They are commonly located at the vaginal opening but can be in the vagina or on the cervix.
