It is concerning: due to a possibility of a common form of cutaneous neuropathic pain that  is associated with herpes zoster infection. It has been estimated that approximately 10-20% of the population will develop HZ during their lifetime. Individuals over 50 are particularly susceptible because of reduced cell-mediated immunity.

Could be..: If the shingles rash was on your face, you can have pain and burning before the rash appears and after the rash disappears... Sometimes for weeks to months afterwards.  If you were treated early with antiviral medications, it makes it less likely that you will have lingering pain.

Complicated shingles: Shingles complicated by a bacterial infection such as impetigo would benefit from a combination of prescription medications.  Pain management and avoidance of touching it as much as possible are preventative measures to take while you are waiting for evaluation.  Use new facial towels daily and wash them in very hot water!

Shingles: Covering will help but it could still be touched and passed that way. I would not take a chance. You could be serving someone who is not immune to varicella or immune compromised. Be safe!

Shingles: Most people who have shingles get severe pain to start, and should be treated with antiviral medication.  If not the risk for post-herpetic neuralgia increases.  This pain can be mild to severe, and last for weeks to months.  Other medications, to calm nerves and nerve damage, can be used after the acute infection, to reduce the pain.

No: Shingles is the reactivation of varicella virus (measles virus) latent in nerve cells for decades that descends the nerve to the skin.  It is the reactivation of your own old measles virus.

Yes: Visit your doctor. What you are experiencing is called pre-herpecic neuralgia. You doctor may prescribe antivirals and/ or steroids which could stop the outbreak or decrease the length of the outbreak. Hope this helps!

Did not help: Ice pack might decrease the inflammation but not the infection. You need to have dermatologist to give you antiviral like Valtrex (valacyclovir) to stop the virus asap.

Shingles itching: Hello. Were you prescribed any type of topical medicine to ease the itch such as lidocaine gel 5%? This can be safely applied to areas of intact skin of your face and scalp up to 4 times daily. Just be careful when you are applying it near your eyes. Some oral meds can be converted to topical form and could be useful for the itch like gabapentin, elavil, (amitriptyline) amantadine, etc. These are special scripts.
