Generally, yes: "Sciatica" is a layman's term describing pain in the pelvis or low back that radiates down the back of the thigh, below the knee and usually into the foot.  Medically, it is called a lumbar radiculopathy, though other conditions can mimic the symptoms.  In most cases, the causes are treatable and in many cases, completely treatable.  Treatable dose not mean"cure" however, and it is quite common.

Nerve Pain Medicines: Medicines like gabapentin, gralise, lyrica, (pregabalin) amitriptyline/nortriptyline are typical medicines to help with the nerve pain from sciatica.  Sometimes muscle relaxants and nsaids can be helpful as well.

It does not mean: That your back is unstable just for the reasons described.  Degenerative changes can lead to instability patterns that are best appreciated with standing x-rays espcially combined with bending or flexion /extension views.  Further treatment options are dependent on multiple factors espcially if considering a possible surgery.   See a spine surgeon for an opinion if considering that alternative.
