Give it some time: Give it a month sometimes even two.  However - be aware that there are skin cancers including melanoma that can affect the nail.  If not better after a month, get the area evaluated by your dermatologist.

Subungal hematoma: Abrise under the nail is called subungal hematoma and can be very painful as there is collection of blood under the nail and there is no outlet.Nail looks black and blue.If there is not much pain than the blood will eventually get absorped in your body by itself and needs no treatment
but if there is intense pain than a hole is drilled through the nail to relieve the pressure.

It can take awhile: Subungal hematomas are collections of blood underneath the fingernail plate, usually from a trauma.  They may persist for a very long time and resolve slowly at the rate of the growth of the nail plate.  Several months is not unheard of.

would it be ok to put a false nail ontop of a bruised fingernail. or might it take the whole nail off?

May promote fungus: Depending on the degree of damage the false nail will trap bacteria and fungi which can lead to infection. If it temporary for a special occasion it is ok but for a period of months it may not be the best idea. File nail if possible and cover with polish to hide bruise.

it might: If the injury was enough to disrupt continuous growth of the nail plate - if it does fall off, the new nail may take 6-9 months to regrow.

Ouch!: You may have what's called a tuff fracture on the end of the finger. We really don't do much for that,but if it isn't improving over the next few days or it starts to swell or become warm....see you physician.

No tumor: lump appearing under a bruise frequently  results from hematoma consolidating to produce a  palpable lesion.  Tumors take time to develop.  In rare instances a tumor appears at site of bruise but from  a pre-existing cancer,  removed and appeared under control.  This lesion should be watched to assure no further growth and if not resolved while clinically stable, should have excisional bx

Constriction : You may be having arterial constriction due to the cold and causing thi symptom. Concentrate on keeping your hands warm and this should prevent this occurring
