Contrast: We see things on x-ray when structures with different x-ray densities are next to each other.  So, the diaphragm is a water density that is next to the lung which is air density.   With a good quality image we can make out general muscle contours and sometimes more if there is a lot of fat next to them.  Great question!

Muscles on chest: The main muscles of respiration are the diaphragm and rib muscles. When the body senses the need to breathe deeper or harder, the muscles attached to the clavicles and shoulders are recruited. This usually only happens in cases of respiratory distress.  Also, you could consider the nostril muscles as accessory muscles as they flare in similar circumstances, trying to get more air into the lungs.

NO: Typically dystonia affects skeletal muscle such as the muscles of the arms and legs for example. Internal organs are made up of different muscle called smooth muscle which is not typically affected by dystonia.

Depends: Injury to the diaphragm is not feasible unless there is systemic muscle disease. Intercostal muscle could be injured as part of a bruise and would heal like a bruise.

Injuries: I don't know what kind of diaphragm injury you had, but rib cage injury, even rib fracture, usually heals by 3 months. Perhaps you should consult a thoracic surgeon to obtain an accurate diagnosis. &amp;. appropriate treatment.

Costochondritis: Costochondritis is inflammation of the joints between the ribs and the sternum.  It can be caused by injury or overactivity and usually responds to rest and nsaids.  However, if you have other medical problems such as high blood pressure, or if there are other symptoms such as shortness of breath or dizziness, you should see your doctor to make sure that the pain is not related to the heart.

i have anxiety and it's causing me to cough. my diaphragm hurts from the coughing. i have taken a muscle relaxer and applied heat to the area and it helped but it's still not fixed. this is stressing me out further?
