Yes: If there are no reasons why you can't take birth control pills (smoker, a history of blood clots, etc), some pills  can actually  stop you from having periods.  Many birth control pills may be taken in a way (by skipping the last week of inactive pills) to delay a period.  If your current cycle is extremely heavy, very high doses of either estrogen or birth control pills can usually stop it.

If taken continuosly: If you take only the active pills (first 21 pills for most prescriptions) and then begin the next pack you will skip a period. There are some prescriptions that do this by design.

Period ?: Bleeding which occurs even when  at the time of an expected menstrual onset, is not always due to a post ovulation event. Ovulation may be delayed, and a short (one day) bleeding event may simply be pre-ovulatory, especially in late 30's onwards. Get a serum HCG test to rule out pregnancy, and see your GYN provider for an exam if this continues.
