It depends: Buckling is often related to instability from tears  and exercises will not help until the damage is repaired. If the buckling is due to muscle weakness it depends on what is causing the weakness.

Most commonly: at age 83 and , in fact, in people over their sixties the most common cause of painless knee buckling is QUADRICEPS weakness...There are exercises to treat this and your PCP should be able to describe these exercises. Perhaps a short course of PHYSICAL THERAPY would help (That's what I would recommend) REMEMBER knee buckling is a SAFETY ISSUE and should NOT be IGNORED!

Have his back: checked out. Compression of nerve in the back can cause these symptoms.

: Muscular, tendon or even neurological causes could be the culprits. Talk to the physician who has ordered these tests and continue the search for a diagnosis. They may want to refer you or do more imaging. Be persistent in pursuing a diagnosis.

Probably not.: Knee buckling is a typically a feature of internal derangement such as meniscal tear.  Mechanical symptoms such as buckling or locking are best evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon.  Complex regional pain syndrome is a neurologic disorder with pain, swelling and skin changes as the predominant features.

Possibly, but: Possibly, but could be simply knee instability.  Rheumatology evaluation needed.

Get examination: Your symptoms suggest pain coming from another source , other than the knee. Possibly your lower back., but a good history and physical examination would determine the whether a primary knee problem, lower back issue or peripheral nerve deal. Get examined ! Best of Luck!

: Your neurologist gave you excellent advice.  See an orthopedist, to determine what the cause of your knee pain is. A meniiscal tear could be the reason, but other causes are possible.  Get checked.

Not sure: which side of ankle retinaculum incised? If lateral side where perineum tendons run maybe as those muscles run up lateral side of leg toward knee, but unlikely to cause knee to buckle. Discuss with surgeon

Knee pain: Could be many things including infection from STD (GC) or just strained. I would go to a walk in clinic for evaluation or your reg Dr.
