Sleep apnea: Waking up with a dry mouth is a sign that you are mouth breathing during sleep.  You may have nasal congestion, be a snorer, or have a more serious condition called obstructive sleep apnea. You can try decongestants and nasal strips to see if they alleviate the problem. If not you need to see a dentist that treats patients with osa, or have your medical doctor order a sleep study.

Dry mouth: There are many biotene products on the market that are specifically intended for people with dry mouths. Hydrate yourself more frequently. You can also bring this to the attention of the physician who is prescribing these medicines for you and ask if there are other effective substitutes with less of a potential for producing a dry mouth.

Evaluation: A lot of the time mouth breathing is caused by some sort of airway problem...Enlarged tonsils, deviated septum in your nose, etc.  I'd recommend and evaluation by an ear, nose, and throat specialist (ENT) to check for an underlying cause.  There's really nothing you can do to prevent the dryness from mouth-breathing while you sleep besides correcting the mouth breathing.

You : You are correct. A dry mouth with decreased salivary flow will allow food to adhere to the teeth, increasing the chances of cavities and gum disease.

What must be determined first is the cause of your dry mouth. Do you take high blood pressure meds? Are you anxious or nervous? Many medications have dry mouth as a side effect. There are also certain medical conditions that can cause dry mouth.

You should consult with your dentist and bring a list of medications for him/her to review.
There are saliva substitites for severe cases, but as you said, keeping will hydrated and having meticulous oral hygene may be enough.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor and discuss if you may be depressed. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity at tolerated.

Mouth breather?: Stuffy nose? If you are a mouth breather, especially at night, you will have a very uncomfortable dry mouth. Check with md to rule out other issues as well.

Stop caffiene: Avoid fluids 3 hours before bed. Get off water pills if doc says ok.
Cut back on acidic beverages an citrus fruits.

Stay adequately: Hydrated and make sure your prescriber is aware. Please get tested for sjögren's syndrome which can cause chronic dry mouth. Dry mouth should not continue after the meds are stopped. Talk to your family doctor about treatments of dry mouth that are available, including Bethanechol and xyzal (levocetirizine). Best wishes.
