Do you have a: metal allergy to the new earrings?  Is the post thicker on the more recent earrings?  Do you have an infection?

Pierced ears: Wait  2-3 weeks before changing ear rings. That way youll know that the hole wont vlose up on you.

Ear lobe infection: You have ear lobe infection from ear piercing. The infection may occur because of contamiation during ear piercing or afterward. The best thing to do is to remove the ear rings and start taking an antibiotic to get rid of the infection. You should wait several months before you have your ears pierced again.

No problem: Contact saline is sterile and to the extent that cleaning a fresh piercing helps with the healing, those solutions are a good way to do it.  Make sure you move the keeper in the piercing several time per day which will encourage the clean out and healing.

Pierced ears: New piercings are usually cleaned twice a day. Do not twist  jewelry / post. Saturate gauze w saline solution (pinch of sea salt in warm water), place on piercing &amp; allow it to gently drip into the piercing. Or you can buy pressurized saline solution at a drug store.

Red not normal: Red and swollen is not normal. It is a sign of inflammation and possibly infection. As far as to whether you use a regular earring or a bar, it depends on what you want in the end. If you are only going to be putting regular earrings in, this will be fine to use for your initial piercing. If you plan to use thicker jewelry, you would need a bar.

got ear pierced four months ago, cleaned it daily, never infected. skipped showering one night (severe thunderstorm). ear piercing now infected, skin swelling around and covering earring completely. not painful.what to do? cant afford doctor visit?

: Apply.hot ( not too hot!) water compresses.for 10-15 minutes, pat dry and apply an antibacterial ointment. It's best not to remove the earring so the hole will not close.  Repeat after several hours. If swelling, redness or pain increase, proceed to the emergency room or urgent care clinic where prompt care is available.

Soft scar: The ear piercing involves a puncture through the skin on top and behind the ear lobe as well as the fat in between. This closure makes thick, hard scar. One can massage the scar tissue and try to soften it more quickly. The repiercing could be sooner than six months with such attention.  Once the soft tissue feels supple, one can then mark the ear lobe  to achieve symmetry for the new piercing.
