: The simple answer: it varies depending on machine. There are many factors associated with cancer developing from ionizing radiation. Age, general health, location and other illnesses can affect how your body clears the damage from ionizing radiation. That said, remember that the average person receives 3 mSv of radiation each year just from their natural surroundings with no increased cancer risk.

It : It is important when you read a mammogram to know the age of the patient and the reason it was done. If patient or doctor feels a mass in the breast then it should be pursued with biopsy if the clinical suspicion is high. Also digital mammography has better sensitivity detecting lesions when suspecting. Apparently, there is an abnormality that measures 1 cm in this image and you may need more work up.

: Yes, if the lesion is consistent with an abscess which is usually acute onset, localized tenderness and swelling with or without constitutional symptoms such as fever, fatigue, etc. However, inflammatory breast will be a different issue and biopsy is indeed indicated. Good luck.

i found breast lump mammogram shows fibroadenoma but i read in the report axillary lymphnodes mildly enlarged and mostly reactive what does this mean ?

Lymph nodes: Can enlarge in response (therefore "reactive") to infection or inflammation.  Or it can become enlarged with malignancy, such as lymphoma or metastatic cancer.  I don't think findings on your mammogram are alarming.  Ask your doctor to make sure.

i got a varicella vaccine a few days ago and was wondering if i should stop my prenatal vitamins considering many interactions with varivax? also, i want to do a mammogram, is it safe to do? i read about not doing x rays after varivax?

Some basics: I would not stop vitamins as any interaction is negligible. I would consider waiting 2-3 wks for the mammogram as any breakout due to the vaccine would appear &amp; resolve by them. Anything you read about x-rays and the vaccine is a myth.

what is a mammogram like?

Simple & easy: You will be taken into a room with the mammogram machine.  Your breast will be put between 2 plates (ask for a soft pad on the bottom).  Once the picture is taken the compression (squeeze) is released instantly.  The purpose of the squeeze is to flatten out your natural breast lumps so that abnormalities can be seen.If you have tender breasts, consider taking a pain medicine 1 hour before.

Not necessarily hurt: In order to take a good picture breast tissue must be flattened by providing pressure to one direction. This should be explained to patient and performed gently. A large volume breast may need more pressure, but this can be done gently.
