Gas and diarrhea: Lactose intolerance is the result of an inability to digest the sugar lactose. The consequence is excess gas, bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort or pain after eating a lactose containing food (milk, soft cheese, ice cream, whipped cream, etc).

Best to accept it: The truly lactose intolerant child is either born without the enzyme needed to digest lactose, or looses it with age. It can be  temporary after a bowel injury like prolonged diarrhea. That self heals over time. Humans also do not have enzymes to digest Cellulose (like termites) or fucose (in beans) & life goes on.Kids can take the enzyme as a supplement, or just avoid lactose & have a great life.

Any non dairy: Milk intolerance is widespread. Oddly enough we are the only species that i know of that drinks the milk of another species as a dietary staple. Hormones are given to cows and antibiotics are given to prevent udder infection. These are passed on to the child in the milk. I have seen a hyperactive child become normal within 5 days of stopping milk drinking.

There are many foods: The university of rochester medical center pediatric nutrition web page has a long list of lactose-free foods (plus things to avoid): www.Urmc.Rochester.Edu/childrens-hospital/nutrition/lactose-free.Cfm lactose intolerant persons (over age 3 yrs) can always take lactaid chewables or tablets with meals or snacks that contain lactose. Lactaid milk is fine, and comes as whole, lowfat, or nonfat milk.

Minimal effect : If you are able to stay relatively healthy during pregnancy & keep your basic nutrition in good order neither issue should hurt your baby. The body has a way of sorting out the nutrients baby needs & sending them over the placenta, even if you don't do a good job of keeping up. Your bones can be stripped of calcium & body of nutrients that you don't replace.

Unlikely to be a pbm: As long as you maintain good basic nutrition and rest during your pregnancy, baby should be fine. The fetus has an uncanny ability to draw its needs from your body, so your nutrition is as much to replenish the things baby takes from you as it is to support baby.

Lab Tests or Symptom: Your child's doctor can run lactose-intolerance tests.  However, the easiest way may be to remove lactose-containing foods/beverages from the child's diet and see if their symptoms improve.  I'm afraid all cheeses and yogurts contain lactose.  There are some speciality milks that are lactose free.  However, if your child is lactose-intolerant, there is no need to have dairy in their diet.
