Glucophage (metformin): Depends on what form of metformin you're taking.  But the Glucophage XR dose is usually 500-1,000 mg. per day or Glucophage (Immediate Release) has a target dose of 850 mg. every 12 hours -- hope that helps!

Doable: Some  other choices of that medication category exist that will not increase weight as much eg abilify, geodon, Latuda (lurasidone). Please explore those with your psychiatrist. In general proper monitoring is getting blood draws twice per year to make liver enzyme, glucose, cholesterol and blood cells remain within normal range- the key is to do this regularly and trouble is avoided. Weight loss: Losing weight is a challenge at any time, whatever are the medications you are on. Risperdal oral, or injectable as consta, is only one of the drugs leading to weight gain, increased cholesterol and lipids in blood, although in some individuals do not cause any of these problems. It is calculated that 25-30% of patients would gain up to 5-10 lbs per year. You can lose weight by exercise and diet.

Bariatric specialist: I advise you to find either an internist or bariatric- weight loss specialist to work with. You must be careful managing ketosis and should find a physician comfortable with this practice.

Likely: While it is not certain, risperidone and just about all second generation antipsychotics (zyprexa, seroquel, clozapine) all have weight gain as a common side effect. Abilify and geodon (ziprasidone) less so.

Weight gain:  I am not sure of the mechanism but risperiodone certainly can cause weight gain. Some of my patients have reported carbohydrate craving. I have not seen it used specifically to cause weight gain.

Possible: It is distinctly possible.  Weight side effects of Risperidone at that dose can often be handled with diet and exercise.  However, it is unusual for Risperidone to be prescribed for anxiety, and there are many alternative medications for anxiety. Perhaps there is some special circumstance for you? You may wish to discuss alternatives with your psychiatrist.

No: Risperdal's possible effects on your metabolism should be gone once it is gone from your system.  If you're eating healthy foods in normal quantities and exercising, you should be getting back to normal.  I wonder why the Risperdal was prescribed, though and hope these causes are no longer bothering you.  Work with your doctor on any medication changes.
