Need work up: How many weeks ago? What have you done so far? It may be mild injury i.e. mild muscle or ligament sprain. It can also be injury inside joint i.e. labrum tear. If you have persistent pain, you may need further work up i.e. xray or MRI. You may try stretching exercise.

Facet: Although you are in shape, you can still irritate your back.  Commonly you can irritate your facet area of your spine. This is the cups that actually form your joints between your vertebrae. The pain comes because your nerve roots get irritated. Often this can cause some back spasm.  Relative rest and an NSAID.  This should settle down in a few days. If not improving get checked.
